Pre-Paid Phones Banned in Jammu and Kashmir
Citing security concerns, the Union home ministry has banned prepaid mobile phone services in Jammu and Kashmir. It is said, from 1st November 2009 no pre-paid mobile connections should be issued and the existing pre-paid SIM card sould not be renewed.
This decision comes in the wake of reports that the proper verification is not being done while providing pre-paid connections by the service providers/vendors. The ministry has asked the department of telecommunication to take appropriate steps to implement the decision.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the total number of mobile phone users is 40 lakhs and 25 - 28 lakhs users are using their mobile phones with pre-paid connections. In September 2009, more than 30,000 SIM cards were cancelled in the state and a dozen people have been arrested by the police.
Many people will face difficulties by this decision, but they should think about their security and it is said that this will help to remove unsocial elements from the society.
